Chapter 14

Shayne

I sat at my desk at work in deep thought as I tapped my pen nervously on my desk. The clock on my computer seemed to have read 10:15 for the last two hours and I growing more and more impatient. I grabbed my phone and scrolled through the text message chain that I had going with Jay and scrolled up the the message where we agreed on a good time to meet up to discuss.

“Ugh! twelve o’clock.” I was anxious to make my way over to the Starbucks across the street from my job to meet Jay. I wanted to know what she was like, how her voice sounded and how she carried herself. What was more important, I wanted to meet with her to get her side of the story. I wanted to see what she had to say about sleeping with a married man.

I looked at my Outlook inbox and the number of unread emails seemed to be growing by the minute, but I couldn’t focus on work. My office was very large but quiet. The engineers that made up the project team were all dry older white men that could care less about each other let alone holding conversation. There weren’t that many women in the office and definitely no woman that I would care strike up a friendship with. Soft elevator music played over the loud speaker, and there were televisions mounted on the walls that were set to various news stations. I guess the music and the televisions were the companies attempts to keeping us engaged on the job, but I was beyond over the whole setup of the bio chemical engineering firm. Well at least this day I was. After staring at the time in the corner of my computer screen for as long as I could bare, I grabbed a red pad that I kept on my desk for taking phone messages and started to doodle and scribble down the thoughts running through my head. This was something I had always done when I was either bored or unable to focus on the task at hand.

I’m pissed!

I love him but I hate him…

I hate him..

I could KILL him

I must have been so caught up in my thoughts and scribbling that I didn’t even notice my manager walking up behind me. “Working hard or hardly working?” he said scaring me half to death and causing me to nearly jump out of my seat.

“Oh hey Jeff, you startled me.” I said placing my hand on my chest. Jeff was a great manager. He didn’t mind slowing down the fast pace of the project in order to teach me. He understood when it came to time off and most importantly… he let me do what the hell I wanted at work. It seemed like I was an asset to the company and it was nice to feel valued…for once. Not to mention he was tall, muscular and wore the hell out of a tailored suit.
